Dear Commerce Parents and Families,
You may have heard recent news about a potential data breach involving PowerSchool, the platform our district uses to manage student information. PowerSchool is the most widely used Student Information System (SIS) in the country, serving tens of thousands of schools and over 60 million students across nearly 100 countries. Unfortunately, PowerSchool has reported that this incident may have affected schools globally using their services, including ours.
We want to emphasize that Commerce Public Schools takes the protection of our students’ and families’ information extremely seriously. We select partners like PowerSchool with the expectation that they uphold the highest standards of data security. This situation is unacceptable, and we are working with PowerSchool to understand how this occurred and what steps are being taken to prevent it from happening again.
At this time, we do not have confirmation of specific impacts to our district or what data, if any, may have been accessed. However, PowerSchool has stated that they believe all data that was accessed has been destroyed. The company is continuing its investigation and implementing additional security measures.
For updates on the investigation and more information about this incident, please visit PowerSchool’s official page at: https://www.powerschool.com/security/sis-incident/.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work with PowerSchool to address this issue.
Sincerely,
Stephen Moss
Superintendent
